Djirra welcomes the Allan government’s commitment to ending violence against women

A message from Djirra CEO Antoinette Braybrook AM on the Allan government’s commitment to ending violence against women:

“Djirra welcomes the Allan government’s commitment to ending violence against women, but we MUST see meaningful action.

Our Premier has a unique opportunity to put Aboriginal women’s voices and experience front and centre by ensuring that our specialist family violence organisations are represented on the proposed taskforce to end this crisis.

Women continue to do the heavy lifting in calling out men’s violence but there continues to be INADEQUATE FUNDING for our specialist frontline services that prioritise Aboriginal women and children’s safety.

We MUST see an urgent injection of funding into Djirra’s specialist, self-determined solutions. We MUST see evidence of this commitment in the upcoming state budget.

Today in Victoria, Aboriginal women are 45x more likely to experience violence than other women. This is devastating and unacceptable – it’s time to end this epidemic.

At the same time, we must see men step forward without fear, shame or blame and carry some of the load. Your mums, daughters, sisters, grandmothers are counting on YOU.”
