Last week, members of Djirra’s Senior Executive Team, Jaynaya Williams, Jo Kakafikas and Maree Overall, attended the 2026 Julia Gillard Next Generation Internship Breakfast.
This year’s intern, Alex Cowen, presented her research, Press, Posts and Polka-Dots: Evaluating the Impact of Media on Women’s Political Pursuits in Australia.
Her report explores how racism and gendered stereotypes in media coverage can undermine Aboriginal women’s political leadership. It highlights the importance of challenging these barriers and ensuring Aboriginal women are fairly represented and have the opportunity to exercise their leadership in public life.
Special guest, the Hon @juliagillard AC, Australia’s former Prime Minister, spoke of the “hope from the young people who are claiming their leadership.”
Djirra is an Aboriginal women-led organisation, committed to our right to self-determination. For more than two decades, we have demonstrated that Aboriginal women have the knowledge, power and solutions to transform our own lives and the lives of our children and families.
Aboriginal women have always led, and we will continue to lead. It is our right to exercise our leadership, and what is needed is genuine investment in Aboriginal women and our solutions.

Three years on, it’s still yes. It will always be yes.
Djirra remains committed to the @ulurustatement from the Heart. Our voices remain strong, our resolve unwavering, and our calls for action as urgent as ever.
As Djirra CEO @antoinette_braybrook AM says: “Our right to self-determination was never theirs to give, and it was never theirs to take away. Three years on, Aboriginal women are still leading the way. Keep your YES alive. Stand with us. Raise your voice. Demand action.”
Don’t let your YES end at the ballot box. Back Aboriginal women and Djirra’s calls for:

Yesterday was International Day of the Girl Child.
Every Aboriginal girl has the right to grow up safe, strong, connected to her culture and family. To dream big, make her own choices and determine her own future.
But for too many Aboriginal girls, their lives are impacted by violence, racism, discrimination, disadvantage and poverty, and systems that deny them the same opportunities and freedoms as other children.
This is not the future we want for our girls. It is not the future they deserve.
For more than two decades, Djirra has stood alongside Aboriginal women and their children. When Aboriginal women are safe, supported and able to exercise our right to self-determination, we create possibilities, opportunities and stronger futures for ourselves, our children and families.
Our vision for Djirra’s Aboriginal Women’s Centre is about more than a building. It is about creating a place where Aboriginal women and their children can access safety, connection, opportunities and the resources to determine their own futures.
Through our Strong, Safe, Together campaign, we are calling for investment in this vision, in Aboriginal women`s leadership and in our solutions.
The future of Aboriginal girls must be determined by their strength, their voices, their aspirations and the possibilities before them, not by violence, racism, discrimination, disadvantage or poverty.
We are calling on all political parties to commit to investing in Djirra’s Aboriginal Women’s Centre.

Djirra’s submission to the ‘Inquiry into the relationship between domestic, family and sexual violence and suicide’ calls on Australian governments to recognise and urgently address the national crisis of Aboriginal women dying by suicide.
Closing the Gap commits to a significant and sustained reduction in Aboriginal suicide rates towards zero. Yet, devastatingly, suicide rates for Aboriginal women have risen. This demands urgent action now: governments must invest in Aboriginal women’s self-determined solutions, including the services and programs delivered by Djirra and other specialist FVPLSs that address violence, trauma and systemic racism.
This month is Mental Health Month AND its time to DEMAND ACTION.
We DEMAND NATIONAL LEADERSHIP and an INVESTMENT INTO ABORIGINAL WOMEN’S SELF DETERMINED SOLUTIONS

We are incredibly proud to celebrate our CEO, Antoinette Braybrook AM, who was honoured with the President’s Award for Outstanding Service at the Law Institute of Victoria Awards last night.
While this award recognises Antoinette’s decades of advocacy, leadership and a commitment to Aboriginal women and their children, it is also a reflection of the strength and dedication of the entire Djirra team.
From our frontline workers to the people behind the scenes, every person at Djirra plays a role in supporting Aboriginal women to be Strong, Safe, Together.
We have achieved so much together, but our work is far from over.
Every day we see growing demand for our life saving services, and every day Aboriginal women continue to show us the strength, resilience and leadership that drives our advocacy.
That is why we continue to call for investment in Djirra’s Aboriginal Women’s Centre and for governments to listen and act on the solutions Aboriginal women have been leading for generations.
“As Aboriginal women we have the knowledge, the leadership and the vision for what it takes to keep ourselves, our children and future generations Strong, Safe and Together. Our solutions save lives and save money.” – CEO @antoinette_braybrook
Thank you to Louisa Gibbs, CEO of @communitylawvic for the nomination, to @yourliv for this recognition and to everyone who stands with us in this work.
