Strengthening Cultural Safety Project Update

Following up on Friday CE Team's update, see below the very positive feedback shared on social media by one of the attendees, Clare Murphy from Each.

Reminder, 85 staff coming from 23 organisations attended the introductory workshops facilitated by Wanda, Kelly, Meena, Vicki C, Vicki M and Anne B with Georgina's support between November 2019 and February 2020. Djirra’s project methodology challenged the deficit discourse common in presentations about Aboriginal peoples and replaced it with a strengths based approach.

In the next steps, Djirra will make contact with the organisations that have not engaged yet with the project so far, with an offer of  a final opportunity to join introductory workshops in March.

The Action Plan - distributed during the workshop in paper form - will be emailed to organisations who have attended the introductory workshops with an attached schedule of consultation “clinics”. The “clinic” will run at designated times from April to September and will provide opportunities for organisations, individually or in groups, to discuss completion of the Assessment Tool and the Action Plan.
Our Sisters Day Out in Swan Hill got local media coverage in The Guardian with a beautiful image featuring Theresa Edwards, Vicky Murray and Alma Morgan.
AFVLS updates
Nalleijerring Gahgook – Aboriginal Family Law List

The first sitting of the Aboriginal Family Law List commenced in the Federal Circuit Court on Friday 7 February 2020. The name of the list is Nalleijerring Gahgook, “Unite with Respect” and represents an exciting new initiative designed to provide a more culturally responsive approach to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander parties appearing before the court in Family Law matters. The list will operate initially from Melbourne, with occasional sittings in Dandenong and Shepparton, but is open to parties living anywhere in Victoria. Currently, two judges have been appointed to conduct the list, both of whom have undertaken cultural awareness training. It is intended the training will be ongoing and ultimately rolled out to other court staff. An Aboriginal Liaison Officer has also been appointed, Majella McGrath, who will liaise with both parties to the proceedings and the court.

It is intended that hearings will operate on a more informal basis, with judges to sit across from parties at the bar table. VLA and Women’s Legal Service are providing a duty lawyer service for the list and have agreed to enter into an MOU with Djirra and VALS to ensure Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander parties are offered a culturally responsive referral. An official launch for Nalleijerring Gahgook will take place in April 2020 (details to be confirmed) and we look forward to providing updates as it progresses.

Terri has been admitted!

The legal team is excited to confirm that Terri Pollard has been admitted to practice as a lawyer on Tuesday 11 February 2020 at 11am. Terri has been a much respected paralegal support worker for Djirra in both Northcote and Bendigo offices and is now a solicitor in our Bendigo office. The admission ceremony is an exciting day and we were all thrilled to congratulate Terri! At the ceremony, Terri proudly wore KWP's Elders Skin Cloak. (Kate)

Warrnambool stakeholder engagement

Our Warrnambool team recently had a productive meeting with the Specialist Family Violence Advisor from the Mental Health Services Department at South West Health Care (SWHC) who is looking at ways in which Family Violence Services and Mental Health Services can strengthen their working relationships for the benefit of clients.
Discussion included input from Djirra concerning the barriers faced by our clients in accessing services and what mental health service providers could do to improve their provision of service to Aboriginal clients experiencing family violence. The valuable engagement resulted in an invitation to attend a lunch at South West Health Care on International Women’s Day where Adeline has been invited to perform the Welcome to Country and agreement to another collaborative meeting in the coming weeks. Legal Services referrals

The Legal Services team is currently accepting new ongoing clients for Northcote and all regional offices except for our Gippsland offices where we are offering an advice and referral service pending further recruitment. Any queries, please feel free to contact Kate or Megan.
