HRC 41st session

At the UN Human Rights Council 41st Session, Antoinette Braybrook and Meriki Onus made five interventions calling for urgent action in key areas, including: Family Violence, Self determination, Incarceration, Child protection, Treaties, ParentsNext, Close the Gap.

Djirra’s calls:

A National child protection notification scheme – to ensure parents, especially
Aboriginal mothers escaping family violence, are referred to an Aboriginal Family
Violence Prevention and Legal Service

Abolish Parents Next a punitive social security program targeting mostly single mums

Invest in National Family Violence Prevention and Legal Services and provide funding
security

Establish a specific Family Violence target to address the high rates of violence against
Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women

Resource the development of a specific National Action Plan to address violence
against Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women and their children

Invest in National Family Violence Prevention and Legal Services to provide wrap
around holistic support to Aboriginal parents especially mums who are escaping
family violence to keep their children safe with them

Stop investing in and stop building and expanding prisons

Stop investing in and building industries on our disadvantage – including in child
protection and youth justice

Retain a separate, standalone and specific Indigenous Legal Assistance Programme (ILAP)

Reinstate the National Family Violence Prevention and Legal Services
program as a dedicated funding stream with a greater investment
